Meningitis: What to Look Out For and When to Seek Help

Meningitis: What to Look Out For and When to Seek Help Meningitis is a serious infection that affects the lining of the brain and spinal cord. While it is uncommon, it can become life threatening very quickly, so it is important to know the signs and act fast. Cases can occur at any time of year, and being aware of symptoms can help ensure early treatment.

Common symptoms include a high fever, severe headache, vomiting, sensitivity to light, stiff neck, and feeling confused or drowsy. Some people may also develop a rash that does not fade when pressed. In babies and young children, symptoms can include being floppy or unresponsive, a high-pitched cry, difficulty feeding, or a bulging soft spot on the head.

If you or someone else has symptoms that could be meningitis, seek medical help immeadiately

Stay Safe & Well – Heat, Infections & Other Risks

Warm weather brings its own health challenges. Heat, sun exposure, and circulating
infections such as flu, COVID19, RSV, norovirus, and meningitis can affect anyone, especially infants, older adults, and those with long-term conditions. Stay hydrated, practice good hygiene, and seek medical advice if unwell to protect yourself and others.

Managing Chronic Conditions Hot weather can worsen asthma, COPD, heart disease, and diabetes. Take medications as prescribed, attend routine checkups, and avoid overheating. If symptoms worsen, seek help promptly.

Home Safety & Wellbeing Stay cool indoors with ventilation or fans, wear light clothing, and protect skin from the sun. Avoid strenuous activity during peak heat and maintain social connections for mental wellbeing

When to Seek Help Contact your GP or pharmacist for high fever, difficulty breathing, severe headache or neck stiffness (possible meningitis), worsening chronic conditions, or persistent vomiting/diarrhea.

Understanding Patient Concerns

Some patients felt there were delays in access to care and appointments

We understand that patients can feel frustrated when experiencing waiting times, difficulty accessing appointments, or not always seeing a preferred GP. We are reviewing our appointment system and clinic capacity to improve access, reduce delays, and support continuity of care wherever possible.

Some patients felt communication could be improved

This includes updates about test results, prescriptions, and callbacks. We are strengthening our internal processes to ensure patients are kept informed in a timely manner and are also encouraging use of the NHS App for quicker access to results and medical information.

Some patients felt there were inconsistencies in clinical and administrative experiences

We recognize that experiences can vary, including with triage, consultations, and reception support. We are enhancing staff training, supervision, and shared learning to ensure a consistent, high-quality experience for all patients

Some patients felt certain processes could be more efficient

This includes areas such as blood tests, prescriptions, and referrals. We are reviewing these processes to improve efficiency, reduce repeat visits, and ensure patients receive timely and effective care.

Some patients felt aspects of their care could be more thorough or personalized

We understand that patients value holistic and attentive care during consultations. We are reinforcing clinical standards and encouraging best practice across the team to ensure all assessments are comprehensive, patient-centred, and tailored to individual needs.
